The Pearl District has become affectionately known for its plethora of artisan cafes, more microbreweries to explore than Friday evenings in a lifetime and its exceptionally creative art scene. Just 30 years ago the Pearl District was the most dilapidated, bleak neighborhood in the city; an abandoned industrial neighborhood inhabited by the homeless, seemingly forgotten by the rest of the city.

European migrant workers flocked to Portland where jobs were plentiful. The Pearl District was part of the project and was designed as a neighborhood to house many of the lower-middle class migrants working in the lumber yards.

By the early 20th century the timber industry and bustling rail yard in Portland were in steep decline. The blue collar workers that were living in the Pearl District began leaving the neighborhood in search of new opportunities.

In , the Pabst Brewing Company began transferring its production to Miller Brewing , on a contract basis, and closing all of its breweries. The site owned and operated by the Pearl Brewing Company was originally known as both the J. Behloradsky Brewery — and the City Brewery. The investment group was composed of local businessmen and several moguls already involved in brewing at San Antonio’s other major brewery, the Lone Star Brewing Company.
Together they formed the San Antonio Brewing Company — , and began to raise capital to fully restart and improve operations at the brewery. The name San Antonio Brewing Association was used as a parent to the brewing company, since it also managed some of the founding members’ other business interests. Functionally, the business structure worked, but it caused confusion with city officials, customers, and business partners; therefore, in the end, the investment group dissolved the San Antonio Brewing Company and used the San Antonio Brewing Association — name for all operations and business transactions.
